Cars Generating Data
It is estimated that the self driving car wll generate a GB of data per second. More opportunity for a dense and volatile data stream for mining.
Changing the Retail Experience
In GigaOM: " ... Its Thanks to the mass market shift to e-commerce and the rise of maker-oriented sites, the way we shop is changing. Grommet a startup out of Boston wants to help innovative products navigate the changing retail landscape. ... The Grommet team consists of four buyers, which Grommet calls “launch managers,” who vet potential products for things such as manufacturability, quality and reliability. They then help those products find an audience. In many ways Grommet is building a higher quality and less cheesy version of the infomercial and using the web to do it at a larger scale without crazy high studio or distribution costs. ... "
Electroceuticals
In IEEE Spectrum: And once drugs have been changed to implants, there is no reason we can't also gather data with sensors at the same time. At first I thought this was about pharma dosing, but the idea is more radical than that: " ... vision involves more than simply taking medical devices like heart pacemakers—which use electric waveforms to activate or block bundles of nerve cells—to the next level, claims Kristoffer Famm, head of bioelectronics research at GSK. The company is aiming for something much more radical: connecting thousands of tightly packed individual nerve cells with electrodes and associated circuitry to read and interpret the “code” in the collection of nerve-cell fibers that constitute a nerve, and then modulating the code to restore a specific function to a healthy state. “No treatments like this even remotely exist today,” says Famm. “The medicine will speak the body’s language.” .... :

RFID Temperature Sensors
A number of interesting developments. Including a temperature sensor with a probe that could be used for temperature controlled supply chain and on shelf retail applications. Another connection to an internet of things, with the temperature being one key data component.
Smart Tooth Sensors
Might be interesting to toothpaste manufacturers. In Mashable: " ... The system places the mouth sensor inside an artificial tooth. A small accelerometer detects mouth movement and small wires send that information to the researchers. The tested design was only a prototype: The research team hopes its next tooth design will involve wireless communication (perhaps Bluetooth) and a rechargeable battery. ... "
Encouraging the Internet of Things
Gartner Encourages early Adopters. Internet of things has long been developed. Now it is getting closer. " ... Emerging connected devices and the "Internet of Things" will offer opportunities for executives looking to bolster their companies' bottom lines, analysts say. According to Gartner's Stephen Prentice, the real-time information provided by the consumerization of IT, coupled with next-generation analytics, will reveal "untapped business opportunities" in manufacturing, deployment and sales and will give IT leaders additional insights
... ... Gartner claims IT leaders that get to grips with IoT early will be best placed to take advantage of emerging business opportunities.
CIOs are being encouraged to develop a better understanding of the Internet of Things (IoT) now, so they will be well-placed to take advantage of the anticipated economic benefits it will bring. ... "
