Life as a Negotiaton
Life as a Series of Negotiations. And the most important ones: " ... Actually, the most important negotiations we have — the ones that determine the quality of our lives and the impact of our actions — are the ones we have with ourselves. Learning to communicate well and to influence other people are essential skills in business. But even more fundamental to your success is learning to negotiate effectively with yourself. ... "

Updating the Shopping Center
They seem to be dying. Yet they still work in much more focused applications as places to display and buy. In Shopperception. " ... Despite the rising numbers of online shopping and the immense power of digital marketing, most people still make their purchases in brick and mortar stores. But what seems more evident is that shoppers expect more than just a place to carry out efficient transactions. In that sense, we wonder about the state of shopping centers and whether they will find a way to adapt to the new consumer trends and expectations. ... According to Nielsen’s recent study, The State of the Shopping Mall, shopping center sales account for over half of retail sales in the U.S. This is not minor as it reflects that although shopping habits may change, the volume of sales in malls is too big to let them die. ... Top Data Science Languages
Vincent Granville usefully summarizes a survey of language use.
Top Languages for analytics, data mining, data science:
Very interesting study published by KDNuggets. Here are the highlights:
The most popular languages continue to be R (used by 61% of KDnuggets readers), Python (39%), and SQL (37%). SAS is stable at around 20%. The highest growth was for Pig/Hive/Hadoop-based languages, R, and SQL, while Perl, C/C++, and Unix tools declined. We also find a small affinity between R and Python users. ... Previous KDnuggets polls looked at high-level Analytics and Data mining software, but sometimes a full-power programming language is needed. ... '
Useful yes, but the respondents here are followers of KDNuggets, skewed I believe to researchers rather than practitioners. By my observation, Excel is still the most used in applications of these ideas, but mentioned nowhere in the article. I think we need more than Excel to do our job, but we can't ignore its existence.

Rexamining Excel 2013
In preparation for a conversion to a more generalized data visualization system I have been exploring Excel 2013 use for visualization. It is commonly used in industry. Much data is already accessible in Excel. I am impressed by the recent changes that have been made for quick prototyping. And the addition of Sparkline capability. There are still issues with the intuitiveness of the interface. More on whats new there.
Transition to Mobile Devices
Considering the issues with transitioning to mobile devices. Much talked these days. " ... The post-PC era is not marked by the extinction of personal computers, but rather by the prevalence of portable computing devices that have ended the unchallenged dominance of desktop and laptop computers in the lives of consumers. This phenomenon is the new norm. It can no longer be dismissed as a bleeding edge technology that major players provide at a high cost or a gimmicky feature that the average user doesn’t demand. ...
